There was a time not so long ago when you had to go along way just to find somebody with an email address. Ten years ago, in fact. it seemed at the time that I was the only one who had one. How massively that has changed, thanks to free Hotmail and later other free email accounts, more recently to social networks, and almost as an afterthought, for business correspondence.
Now there are millions upon millions of email addresses in use, for legitimate private and business use, and also for not so legitimate reasons, such as spamming. Now, just as we used to want to find somebody's telephone number knowing they must have one, we can feel sure that someone we know must have an email address. So, finding email addresses is part of everyday life.
Looking up telephone numbers in telephone directories was quite easy. It was just a matter of picking up a local or regional directory, or calling a directory inquiry service. Finding email addresses, though, is a bit different. In fact, many people do not know where to start. Finding an email address can be easy, difficult or seemingly impossible, and how you do it will also depend on your reason to want to know.
Do you need a friend’s address, for example, or do you want to find out who owns a particular email address? The latter is becoming more and more common as people seek to track who is behind a particular address, such as a stalker or annoying spammer.
If you are seeking to find the email address of a friend or contact, say someone you have not seen for years, then a good place to start is with the big email providers, such as Hotmail, who have a free internet search of their database. The next stop would be the social networks, such as Facebook and Myspace. It is surprising how many people of all ages use these sites, and someone I had not seen for 8 years recently found me on Facebook. Similarly for reverse email address lookups, for which Hotmail has a free service.
If you draw a blank by going through these common sources, then it is a matter of trying a specialist email address directory provider. These organizations, such as emailfinder.com, have comprehensive search facilities. You will have to pay for these, or you may be lucky and get a free search or something like that. The point is, if you are keen enough and feel it is worth paying, these directories are there to help you.
